Reflections

You have no idea how odd it is to come back here after four years. So much has changed. I have grown up, taken two major exams, discovered other things that I like and then to come back here and rediscover my old dreams. Reading about Sammy, the poor whale shark that the world forgot, and about pea chicks and butterflies, it is just strange. How I use to blah about nature in my blood and the birds and butterflies flying close to me. They still do by the way, I just don't find it odd anymore.

I have made very good friends in the last four years and I guess that and the exams drew me away from my dreams as a child. My interests just grew quieter, more silent. I will always love nature. I owe it so much but I am not as passionate as I once was. Or perhaps I have just become more selfish. Sometimes I feel that I have changed for the worse. Or perhaps my dreams simply changed.

I wrote a poem when I was thirteen and I put it here. Now let me put up another one.

A dream that flew away

I will always remember
The sea, the wind and the sun
How they brought laughter to my eyes
And gave me lots of fun

I will remain thankful
For the gifts nature gave me
Companionship in loneliness
Sympathy in misery

I dreamed to always be with them
In some ways I still do
But life changed and I with it
And my dreams changed form too

And while I was busy
With exams and school
My dreams boarded a boat to sea
And left me lost and blue

I floundered for years
In exams, study and tests
Dreams laid low and silent
Until I finally had a rest

So now while new dreams kindle
And life again blooms in the sun
I returned here and found
Some dreams ended before they begun

Hey. Merry Christmas!

I just watched Avatar again and my feelings are still the same as before. I don't understand, I just don't understand this need resulting from greed. Are lives so worthless that they can be traded for a few pieces of paper called money??? People... What's wrong with the world? Sometimes I wonder if we can even save the earth. Or have gone beyond the point of no return? To do it, we need to forget about our individual needs and work for the good of everyone. I seem to think that it requires nothing less than a cultural revolution, a whole new way of living. Can we do that? I don't know.

Hey Guys,

I just watched Avatar earlier today and does anyone else think that the invading humans are more savage than the natives are? I think so, I mean the land is not their's, it does not belong to the human race. What makes them think that just because they want the land, they get the land? It's like we are acting like spoiled kids. Why did I bring this up? Because this applies to our world too. let's imagine, there is a bright new undiscovered land full of gemstones and oil. The ecosystem there is balanced and stable, the native people respect and care for the environment, everything is perfect. Then, someone discovers the land, and guess what happens? The new foreign people take over the land, destroy the original habit, dig holes and disfigure the landscape in search of oil. Worse, they consider the natives 'savagers'and take them as slaves. The once perfect and balanced land is suddenly thrown into disarray in a matter of months.

Anyone heard this story before? If you haven't, go read up on the history of the Americas. The situation I just described actually happened before, and I have a feeling it might not be the last. Right now, this instance, we are doing the very same thing, but this time with plants and animals. Think about it, what makes us think that the rain forest belongs to us? Then why do we destroy it? Why do we kill creatures for their skins? What gives us the right? As far as I see, nothing. We aren't doing it out of need (Which I personally feel is ok), but out of greed. If not our own greed, then for someone elses' greed. Can't they see, we are doing something no other species does:

WE ARE DESTROYING OUR OWN PLANET.

Why are planets round?

Hi everyone,

I am not sure if any of you have ever asked is question,"Why are planets round?". Well, even if have never asked this question, heres the answer anyway.

ANSWER:

gravity, since it is even on every side of the object, in this case the planets core, there is an equal amount of gravity pulling in mass on all sides which is why the atmosphere is a constant distance from gound even the surface is so unsmooth.

Gravity is the key. You may be aware that Jupiter, our largest planetary neighbor in the solar system, is almost all gas (there is a small core of non-gaseous material). Understanding that Jupiter is a ball of gas, wouldn't it be bizzare if it had a shape other than a sphere? Think also of a bubble blown by a child (or your inner child) through a loop. Even very large ones (which are the most fun) seem to seek rest in a spherical shape, even if breezes batter and deform it from time to time. Matter seems to seek to balance internal forces. It would be scary to look up at Jupiter and discover that it had morphed into a doughnut shape or a large tube shape.

When we are talking about collections of matter that are planet-sized, the same general idea holds. Taking a mass equal to that of the earth, and of similar materials, you could attempt in your mind to construct a pillar with a 1,000 kilometer diameter. But you wouldn't get too far before the pillar's mass would exert so much gravitational force that the whole thing would come crashing in. Even if you braced the pillar while building it, the inner sections would eventually crumble and/or melt long before you finished. Eventually, all the mass would find its way to balance out the gravitational forces.

HOOT

Hey everyone,

I just watched the movie Hoot and I honestly think it is a nice movie. It is about 3 kids who try to protect some burrowing owls from being buried when someone tries to turn their home into a pancake house. So there you have it, why I even mention this show in my blog. It is connected to the enviroment in a way after all.

Peachick

Hi Everyone!





A few days ago my family and I were at this sales center which had several peacocks and peahens. We were in the car when someone(I forgot who) suddenly said there was a Peachick outside. I look out of the window and there they were, 2 peachicks walking beside their mother. They were so cute! Here's a photo I found to show you how a Peachick looks like. : )

Hey, ummmm changes

Hey everyone,

I know that I had originally planned to changed my blog completely, but I have to stop that. I simply can't think of anything to write. I got another idea, how about I just write about what fascinates me in science? Who knows it might fascinate you too. science is not all about facts and figures you know. It is much more, and trust me, it can be fun. : )
